Nepali food has been listed as one of the best food throughout the years. Despite modern technology and advancement, food in Nepal still maintains authenticity and taste. Food can be a good reason for traveling to Nepal for sure.

However, eating yummy and flavorful food with a mesmerizing view of the mountains hits differently.

One may think that as the altitude increases, the accessibility to good food may be reduced. But, it’s not the case while traveling to Nepal. You will find better and more flavorful meals as you move to the upper Himalayan regions.

The food in the lodges and tiny guest houses during the Nepal trek and tour is nourishing and so good at the same time. Many claim Nepali Himalayan food to be the motivation and reason one can complete the walk.

The food in each part of the country is eaten based on its geographical being and climate.

Towards the lower region of Nepal, you will find food that helps you beat the tiredness of a hot day.

And towards the upper freezing temperature, the food is designed to keep you warm, fight altitude sickness, and provide energy throughout.

Overall, every part of Nepal serves food that has unique flavors and is undoubtedly made with a lot of love.

    Thakali

Thakali is the very first thing any Nepali food lover would recommend you to eat. Thakali is a set of food designed by the locals.

The food combo consists of dal, lentil soup, Bhat, meaning rice, and multiple vegetable curries, meat, and stir-fried green vegetables. These are the primary things you will find in a Thakali.

Apart from this, side dishes like pickle, curd, ghi (clarified butter) are added on top of the rice, papad (a spicy thin wafer that is either roasted or fried), and many more.

Thakali is what any typical Nepali eats for lunch and dinner. This combination of food is a wholesome combo of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins.

It will give you the energy to trek in the cold climate and is excellent for gaining power after a tiring day.

The right way to make this dish is by using your right hand, as most local Nepalese do

You can also customize your food according to your preference, as most places allow you to do so.

    Nepali Himalayan Porridge

If you are someone who craves a little sweetness for your breakfast, Nepali porridge is your ideal breakfast option. This porridge is made from different combinations of flours, sometimes including rice.

It is cooked and made into a pudding-like form. Mostly, it is topped with a sweetener like honey or ground sugar powder and dry fruits like cashews and raisins.

Porridge is served hot and is best for a cold morning in the upper regions. Many travelers have it for its dietary benefits, and it tastes super yummy.

It will surely make you feel better and help you gain motivation.

    Momo

A trip to Nepal is incomplete without having a hot plate of Momo in the cold weather. Momo is a dumpling filled with vegetables, meat, cottage cheese, soya chunks, etc.

Momo in Nepal is a staple dish. Many consume it as a snack, but a plate of Momo for lunch is also not a bad idea.

These dumplings are served with a spicy sauce. This spicy sauce is usually made of tomatoes, sesame seeds, spices, ginger, and garlic.

You can use a form or, better, use your hand to dive into this goodness. Momo can be stir-fried, deep-fried, steamed, or served with soup.

A soupy momo known as jhol momo is the best way to eat Momo in cold weather in the Himalayan region. It keeps you filled, and the taste will surely uplift your mood.

    Thukpa

Thukpa is a soupy noodle dish that originated from the eastern part of Nepal. This soupy goodness is made with vegetable flavorful broth, boiled noodles, stir-fried or cooked veggies, and meat chunks.

You can easily customize it to be vegetarian or vegan-friendly. The broth has a flavor of spicy garlic, ginger, and many other spices.

The garlic in the soup helps you to adjust to the increasing altitude. The warm noodle slurp is like a hug to the soul in the cold weather.

The dish is hence very commonly preferred by the locals and travelers. Also, this dish is famous in the Himalayan region, covering Nepal, Tibet, China, India, etc.

    Rildok

This dish is a hidden Tibetan dish that is a staple among the Sherpa community in Nepal. Rildok, made of special Himalayan potatoes, is much tastier than usual.

The potatoes sourced from the Himalayan region of Solu or Mudeare are yummy. Hence, any dish made of Himalayan potatoes tastes much yummier than others.

Coming to Rildok, it is made by smashing boiled potatoes in a particular vessel. The mashed potatoes are made into dumplings and cooked in a hot soup.

The soup contains different spices, garlic, ginger, onion, and chilies. It can also be said that anything related to potatoes in the upper regions is so good.

Also, most dishes served under the influence of the Sherpa community involve potatoes. You will personally fall in love with the taste of the potatoes here.

    Yak Cheese

Yaks and Himalayas seem to be the exact words. There are many yaks in the Himalayan region, which are taken care of by communities.

This is done to obtain yak milk and wool. Yak milk is yellow ind is turned into many dairy items, including cheese.

Yak cheese is a must-have when in the Himalayan region of Nepal. Many dishes made of Yak cheese are readily available on trekking routes.

Churpi or Durkha or, say, Himalayan Candy is a substantial block of cheese made by the fermentation of yak milk.

It is super hard to bite into, so keep it in your mouth until it melts.
