What Exactly is a Hex Head Screw?

Also known as a hex bolt, a hex head screw is exactly as it sounds. It is a type of threaded bolt that is most easily identifiable by the six-sided hexagonal head shape. The bolts can either be partially or fully threaded (the partially threaded ones have a shank along part of the body).

Hex head screws are available in different materials, finishes, sizes, and types, providing both strength and flexibility whether they are being used for DIY or business purposes. The shape of the head is the most identifiable factor, though the name can change here and there.

The Uses of Hex Head Screws

Now, the million-dollar question, “What are hex head screws used for?” As it turns out, there are a ton of different uses to be aware of. It is one of the most versatile fastener types out there, largely because of the strength and torque that they provide relative to other bolt or screw types.

The tensile strength is great for use in heavy-duty applications, in particular. You will find them in a lot of construction projects, even in those applications where concrete is involved. You will find hex head screws used in road infrastructure, the construction of bridges, and the repair and maintenance of buildings.

The industrial world sees frequent use of hex head screws. They are a prime part of machinery assemblies and various engineering applications. The automotive world sees them quite a bit as well, through a litany of different applications. This is simply one of the most versatile fasteners out there and you would be hard-pressed to find an application that they couldn’t fit.

    How do They Work?

It is quite simple to understand how these hex head screws work. They can be used for a litany of different applications on pre-tapped holes or through the addition of nuts. Eventually, they are capable of being tightened using tools like socket sets, ratchet spanners, spanners, hex keys, or a hex bolt wrench. These are common tools and even most DIYers have at least one of them in their toolbox.

The hex head is critical when it comes to grip. They are easier to tighten regardless of the angle or the type of tool you use. Installation and removal are pretty straightforward and even areas that are tough to reach can be handled with ease.

    Thread Types

One of the clear factors that distinguishes one type of hex head screw from another is the threading. There are two types of hex head screws: partially and fully threaded. The partially threaded usually has a smooth metallic section running beneath the head and ensures that even that area is protected under extreme torque.

Fully threaded hex head screws have threading from top to bottom. They are meant to evenly distribute pressure across the entire length of the bolt, providing even more strength than the partially threaded hex head screws would offer.
